Ich platze es mal gleich zu Beginn raus: diese so kurze wie mitreißende Platte ist wirklich fantastisch und pulverisiert einmal mehr meine Vorurteile gegenüber Grammy-Gewinnern. Es beginnt zunächst recht entspannt-tröstlich und (neo)soulful mit "Lean On My Love"; Andra Day ist hier GesangsPartnerin. Dann aber folgt schon das fulminante, zwischen New Orleans’schem VoodooJazz und Blues(Brothers)SoulGroove changierende "Big Money" mit einem sehr beachtlichen Text, dessen Weisheiten wir hier mal ausführlicher zitieren müssen: "You can buy a house / But you can’t buy a home / You can be surrounded / But still be alone / Oh, Lord / You can be living the life / But not living the dream (it seems) / Mama said, boy don’t you be no dummy / Everybody chasin’ that big, big money / Big Money / You might have got a horse / Don’t mean you can ride it / You might have got a plane / That don’t make you fly … You can buy a song / Don’t mean you can sing / You can win it all / And still lose everything …" So true! Dazu gibt’s auf den einschlägigen Portalen übrigens ein sehr schickes Video – ansehen! Anschließend betritt der junge Roots&Gospel-Freak Batiste - gemeinsam mit keinem Geringeren als Randy Newman - die "Lonely Avenue": ein rollend in tiefsten Lagen wühlendes Klavier und klagender, zuweilen beinahe Crooner-hafter BluesGesang. Außerdem hören wir hier in nur reichlich 30 Minuten herrliche Balladen wie "Do It All Again" und flotte AmericanaShuffles wie "Pinnacle", aber mit "Angels" auch einen fröhlichen Stomp. Und auch die Umstände, unter denen diese Aufnahmen entstanden, sind denkbar "oldschool" und "real", denn die tracks wurden live im Studio aufgenommen. Roh und direkt, keine overdubs, kein MehrspurOverkill, nur die unmittelbar erfühlte Performance. Auf dem CD-Cover wird das so beschrieben: "All Songs recorded live. The band and vocal performances were all captured together in the same room at the same time to maximize connectivity and expression. Original songs channeled thru Jon Baptiste given by YAHWEH."
